John Barleycorn Must Die
In this project I created a series of four soft wax etchings depicting the folklore and customs surrounding harvest in Britain and across Europe. A key theme that I wanted to show with the series was the personification of the grain.
I found it interesting how the general beliefs in corn spirits and the celebration of harvest were universal across the continent but there were specific regional customs and local traditions.
These beliefs are derivatives of ancient ones but remain relevant because of the annual cycles and the way grain is ever-present in our food and drink in modern times.
I wanted to show how corn dollies were made to capture corn spirits as it communicates how intertwined the craft and folklore are.
These etchings went on to be exhibited at Studio 20, Norwich, as part of Site Collective's 'Occult Show', Summer 2020.
